Much as P Diddy would like to have you believe otherwise, ‘Neu! 2’ is widely regarded as having invented the remix. How so? Well, returning to the studio in 1973 to record a follow-up to their debut LP, Neu! only committed 20 minutes of material to tape; with ‘Neu! 2’ comprised of manipulated elements of this base material. Whilst many have floundered trying to achieve similar results in the intervening decades, Rother and Dinger really perfected the slow-down/speed-up/re-cast aesthetic before anyone else had a chance to try.
