POLKA CHINATA or CROUCHED POLKA is a historical bolognese dance rigorously performed by pairs of male dancers both for social reasons (insufficient women emancipation in the post-war period) and acrobatic requirements. The origins of the dance bring us back to the 1940s and the post-war reconstruction, when, under the arcades of Bologna, dancers exhibited their skills and competed with each other, accompanied only by the music of the accordion. Fuelled by the necessity to impress girls, men took advantage of their physical abilities and performed spectacular evolutions such as the famous “crouched whirl”! From this specific figure came the name of the dance. The CROUCHED POLKA is exclusive to the city of Bologna, and can be considered, in some ways, a sort of peculiar, Bolognese, form of “breakdance”.
